In your first two years, you will study the core areas of psychological science while practicing your research skills in the laboratories weekly. The research our academic staff carry out will shape the areas you will cover. Some of these topics include:
- Cognitive neuroscience of language and memory
- Social interaction, communities, and activism
- Children’s cognitive development, including literacy, tool innovation and imagination
- Mental health and neurodiversity
In year 3 you can tailor your degree to your interests and ambitions. You can choose from various modules that introduce professional specialisms, such as clinical and health psychology. You will also have the chance to study advanced topics in psychological science and conduct a piece of original research under the supervision of a member of the academic staff in your dissertation module.
As a Psychology student, you can access our dedicated lab spaces. You will use our computer labs for research methods classes and our suite of research labs for collecting data. The research labs include:
- EEG lab - for recording electrical activity in the brain
- Eye tracking lab - for monitoring gaze patterns with static or mobile eye trackers
- Virtual reality (VR) equipment
- Observation lab, which includes wall and ceiling-mounted cameras
- An extensive collection of psychometric tests and questionnaires
Our dedicated team of technicians will support you when working with laboratory equipment.
We focus on developing your employability throughout your degree. In our second-year module, Applying Psychology to Work, you will complete work experience or an employer-led project in a field related to your ambitions.
