What "in time for September" actually means

If you’re a Ghanaian student aiming for the September 2026 intake, the calendar tightens fast. The non-negotiable dates are visa-driven, not university-driven. The gov.uk Student visa apply page sets out when you can lodge your application — typically up to six months before course start, and no later than the date your CAS letter expires. Working back from a 1 September course start, most applicants find that submitting university applications by mid-July is the latest sensible point — though specific universities run their own deadlines. Always check the deadline published on the course page.

Weeks 1–2 · Documents and shortlist

Document preparation is where most timelines slip. The list below is what UK universities and UKVI typically require:

  • WASSCE certificate (or pending result with school confirmation letter)
  • English language evidence — many UK universities accept a sufficient WASSCE English grade as evidence; some require IELTS, PTE Academic or another approved test, particularly for visa purposes. The accepted evidence is set by each university and by UKVI’s Secure English Language Test list — check both.
  • Personal statement — for UCAS undergraduate applications the published length limit is set on ucas.com (formats and lengths have changed in recent cycles, so confirm the current rules)
  • Two academic references
  • Passport copy with sufficient validity for the intended study period

For shortlist building, a useful framing is the 5-2-1 rule: five universities where your published WASSCE results comfortably meet the course’s published entry requirements, two stretch options, one safety. Our FAQ on choosing a UK university from Ghana walks through how to read entry requirements and English-language conditions on each course page.

Weeks 3–4 · Submit applications

Most Ghanaian applicants apply through UCAS for undergraduate study (a single application covers up to five university choices; UCAS publishes the current application fee on its site). Postgraduate applicants generally apply directly to each university. Both are accepted; the right channel depends on your level of study.

Decisions are made by the university and timing varies — some courses come back inside a few weeks, others take longer, particularly during peak cycles. The decision window for any specific course is set by that university; UCAS publishes its UCAS Hub timeline for undergraduate applicants. Your application is assessed on academic results, your personal statement, and your references. For structure on the personal statement, see our FAQ on writing a UK personal statement from Ghana.

Weeks 5–7 · Offers

UK universities issue conditional offers (subject to outstanding results or conditions) or unconditional offers (where all conditions are already met). Through UCAS, undergraduate applicants accept a firm and an insurance choice via UCAS Hub. Postgraduate applicants accept by following the process the university specifies — usually involving a tuition deposit. Deposit amounts vary by university and course; the only reliable figure is the one your offer letter states.

This is also the natural moment to apply for scholarships. See our companion piece: Scholarships for African Students in 2026. Each scholarship’s deadline and decision timeline is set by the awarding body — check the scholarship’s own page.

Weeks 8–9 · CAS letter and pre-visa preparation

Once you have accepted an offer and met any pre-CAS conditions (which can include tuition deposit, final transcripts, English-test scores, or in some cases an academic interview), the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). The CAS is required for your visa application.

For the visa, the gov.uk Student visa funds page sets out maintenance amounts and the rule that funds must be held for a continuous period before you apply. Time the CAS request so your evidence sits comfortably within that window. See our FAQ on CAS and proof of funds.

Weeks 10–11 · Lodge the visa

The Student Visa application is in two parts: an online application at gov.uk/student-visa (which sets out the current application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge — both are published there and have changed in recent years; check before applying), followed by a biometric appointment, in Ghana usually with VFS Global in Accra (visa.vfsglobal.com). The current decision waiting time for Student Visas from Ghana is published by UKVI on the gov.uk visa processing times tool — refer to it for the up-to-date figure rather than rules of thumb.

Common issues at the visa stage are insufficient or incorrectly-evidenced funds and credibility interview challenges. Our FAQ on visa interview preparation covers what to expect.

Week 12 · Travel and arrival

After your visa is approved, the remainder is logistical: flights, accommodation (university-managed or private), and setting up a UK bank account on or shortly after arrival.

The single biggest preventable mistake

Ghanaian applicants who miss September almost always miss it at the same point: waiting for "everything to be perfect" before submitting. Universities and the visa system don’t penalise applications that are improved iteratively. They penalise late submissions.
